Apple Touch Bar
Apple are starting to make me second guess myself by applying around the world for a trademark for ‘Touch Bar’
This was first filed in Jamaica on 26 April 2016, so yesterday was the last day they had to make their Global Applications based on that initial filing……and they have.
So far, I’ve found applications in:
- Europe
- The UK
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Iceland
- Israel
- Turkey
Touch Bar is what I had initially speculated would be announced at the iphone 7 announcment
Then I pivoted to deciding the #Touchbar was actually going to be called the #MagicToolbar….
Now I’m not sure.
The facts haven’t really changed.
In favour of the name being the “Magic Toolbar” is the fact that they have called lots of their other products Magic, and that the Global application was filed on a massive global scale and it being filed by a dummy corporation in Delaware etc etc etc – You can see my reasoning HERE
BUT the first “Magic Toolbar” application was filed before the first “Touch Bar” Application. The first “Magic Toolbar” application was on 05 February 2016, and the first “Touch Bar” application was on 26 April 2016. Now, why would you bother registering ‘Touch Bar’ 2 months after “Magic Toolbar” unless you had had a re-think about the name?
Also, the registration for “Touch Bar” is more extensive in terms of goods covered than that for “Magic Toolbar”
“Magic Toolbar” is registered for this in some countries…..

But the majority of counties (through the global application) are for only:
09 Computers; computer hardware; computer software; computer peripheral devices; computer display screens and keyboards; electronic interfaces for use with computers.
Unfortunately, this argument also goes both ways – It’s very limited protection by apple standards – but you could argue that means it’s more likely to be accepted in more countries.
And “Touch Bar” is registered for most of that, and more, and an additional class of goods:
